Did you know this about our July 4th holiday?

On July 4, 1776,  the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence to announce the separation from the Kingdom of Great Britain. However the vote for independence happened two days earlier, on July 2, 1776.

July 4th also isn’t when the Declaration of Independence was signed. The delegates began signing the Declaration of Indepenence on August 2th of that year, with John Hancock being the first signer. It took some time before the signing of the declaration was completed.

Even so, July 4 is seen as the “birthday” of American independence.

Enjoy your 4th of July. But remember the day is more that a day for parades, festivals, Bar-b-ques and other kind of celebrations. It is a day to celebrate our country and our democracy.

Have fun, and be safe. Happy July 4th St. Landry Parish! From the Staff of St. Landry Now.
