The Opelousas Daughters of the American Revolution gathered on the grounds of the St. Landry Parish Courthouse Thursday afternoon to commemorate the 239th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. Joining the group was Councilman Wayne Ardoin representing St Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard who wasn’t able to attend the ceremony.
Ardoin led the group in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and after saying a few words on the ceremony he read the Preamble to the Constitution. DAR member Carolyn. Jarrell spoke on the importance of the ringing of the bells which was done 239 years ago to alert to citizens of the signing. The DAR members also presented an American Flag that will fly over the Opelousas City Hall.
