With the annual NFL Super Bowl only days away, the head football coaches in St. Landry Parish have again agreed to provide their insight, this time for the 58th game played this year in Las Vegas.
Will the Kansas City Chiefs, running high on momentum after two playoff road victories win another playoff game, or will the San Francisco 49ers claim another Super Bowl, using perhaps the most assembled talent in the NFC?
We’re leaving that decision up to the coaches who are picking the Super Bowl winner for St. Landry Now.com. Each coach provides sufficient reasons for their choices, so now it’s time for our readers to examine those decisions and determine if they agree with the choices the coaches have made.
Here’s what the coaches think:
JAMES SHIVER, ST. EDMUND
“I like Kansas City. You have Travis Kelce, a veteran coach in Andy Reid, the thing with Taylor Swift and a team that is hot right now. The Chiefs have all that going for them at this point.”
BUCK HARRIS, BEAU CHENE
“I’m going with the 49ers. I like Mahomes because he has more Super Bowl experience, but if you look at the stats, the 49ers have the talent, with Christian McCaffery and the other weapons making the difference. Brock Purdy has outstanding passing yardage.”
BYRON PORTER, WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN
“I like the 49ers because of their defense. The San Francisco defense is aggressive and at the end of the game that is going to be the difference.”
BRENT ANGELLE, PORT BARRE
“I’m going with the 49ers. I like Purdy. I think having Purdy in there as a seventh round draft choice and a Super Bowl quarterback is really a great story. No one has really been picking the 49ers to be in this game.”
CULLEN MATHERNE, OPELOUSAS CATHOLIC
“I’m a Kyle Shanahan fan and I think he and the 49ers are going to get their revenge for losing to the Chiefs a couple of years ago in the Super Bowl. I like their roster. Everyone is talented and their defense is certainly good enough.”
ANDRE VIGE, EUNICE HIGH
“First of all, I’m expecting a real good game. Kansas City has come on at the end of the year and looking at that, you have to go with them. Mahomes is playing real well right now, so I’m going with Kansas City.”
JIMMY ZACHERY, JR. OPELOUSAS HIGH
“I like the Chiefs and Mahomes. He (Mahomes) has been there. Right now I’m not going to bet against (Mahomes) and I am going to keep riding with him. I don’t think that Purdy is a good enough quarterback to win it.”
CHRIS EDWARDS, NORTHWEST HIGH
“Mahomes is the most talented player at his position right now. He does so many things, that he reminds me a lot of Michael Jordan when (Jordan) did similar things when he was in the NBA. Right now I’m not going to pick against (Mahomes) or the Chiefs.”
