The Opelousas Public Library’s Summer Reading 2024 kicked off on Tuesday with a story time read by a special guest, Mayor Julius Alsandor.

Adventure Begins at Your Library

The Opelousas Public Library hosts goal-oriented programs for teens and adults to encourage reading and public library use during the summer months and beyond. The Summer Reading Program is designed for young children to promote positive reading habits that will spark curiosity and fuel young minds’ love for reading.

The library held its first summer Story Time for 2024 on Tuesday in conjunction with the Literary Lights event with local authors. Mayor Julius Alsandor made an appearance to support the event and he happily obliged to read a story to the kids offering a friendly voice and encouraging prompts that captivated the realm of possibilities when you open up a book.

The program was welcomed by all who attended with fun prizes that were given away, a craft and light refreshments served.

The summer reading program begins on June 4th. Stop in at the library to register your child for fun activities and story hours. As part of the requirement for the program, teens and adults are encouraged to read at least 6 books throughout the summer. A story time will be held at the library every Tuesday in June through July 16th with a story and a fun craft to follow. Library participants will also have the opportunity to score cool rewards. The purpose of the Storytime is to stimulate children’s imaginations and encourage them to respect each other and the storyteller. Activity days will also be held at the library on Thursdays in June through July 18th.

A reading certificate and other rewards will be presented at a special program at the Library on Friday, July 19th at 2pm.

Registration is required. Last day to register is July 1. Keep a list of books read and bring to the library to be counted on your child’s reading log.

A New Look Coming to the Library

The Library will soon be undergoing long-awaited renovations to bring new life into the public library. Mayor Alsandor explained the project is one that has been long overdue and made possible through the planning and budget implementation from ARA funding.

“Because libraries offer free access to all, they bring opportunity to all.” Mayor Alsandor further explained that for the previous years the library has made do with what they had with many thanks to the efforts of Library Director Angela Zachary. With the renovations will come a new and thrilling dynamic to the library that will have patrons wowed whenever they walk in.

Due to the remodel, the library will be closed during specified time periods, however this will not affect the story and activity times scheduled for the summer reading program.
