Eric Tucci and his daughter, Niya, arre thankful for the St. Landry Parish Government shelter at the Yambilee Building. Trekking across the country they found themselves in Lawtell when the sub-freezing temperature settled in Acadiana Monday. They were told about the shelter at the Yambilee Building and made their way there Monday afternoon. Originally from Florida Eric and his daughter and their trusty dog, Missy found refuge in the warm combines of the shelter. There they found a warm place to stay, a bank of portable showers and thanks to the generosity of some of the local eateries and volunteers sampling of some good Cajun and Creole cooking. Eric, Niya and Missy will remain at the shelter until the weather gets back to normal then get back on the road with their destination being upstate New York. The shelter will remain for at least the rest of the week as more below freezing is expected tonight and Wednesday. A warming trend is expected Thursdy with more cold setting in on Friday.
