Tutoring Programs Scheduled

St. Landry Parish kindergarten through fifth grade students who require additional instruction in mathematics and language arts will soon begin a 10-week,state-required in-school tutoring, school officials said this week.

Curriculum Director Angela Cassimere told a School Board Academic Committee on Tuesday night that details for the $452,000 state-funded program labeled High Dosage Tutoring Guidance, will be explained to parents during separate in-person instructional sessions.

Cassimere said an academic team assigned to help administer the tutoring program will introduce aspects of the tutoring program at the School Resource Center in Opelousas on Thursday night starting at 5:30 pm.

Another session is scheduled for East Elementary in Eunice sometime in October, according to Cassimere.

The tutoring programs will start 15-days after parents have been provided with the necessary information.

Eligible kindergarten through third-grade students who score below or well below on a stateside literacy screening tests and those who scored below proficiency on numeracy testing will be tortured.

Cassinere said that fourth and fifth grade students who have scored unsatisfactory, approaching basic and basic on LEAP in math and English language arts also qualify for the mandatory tutoring.

The 30 minute small group tutoring sessions will occur three times a week and last for about 30 minutes each, said Cassimere..
