Elbert Guillory decided 31 years ago that it was also best to donate at Christmas and he and his family have not stopped giving ever since.
Guillory along with family members and his legal staff were in front of his East Landry Street office again on Saturday, soliciting toys and funding for the annual Guillory Family Doll and Toy Drive which distributes gift items to needy area children.
The former Louisiana state senator, who indicated on Saturday that he might run for lieutenant governor in the next statewide election, was collecting toys and funding to buy presents for children who normally can’t afford gifts.
Guillory has said in the past that he and his wife realized three decades ago when his daughter Imani was a year old that they wanted to provide a proper example for their young child.
Gifts from friends and relatives poured into the Guillory household on that first Christmas and Guillory said he decided it was important to teach their young child that giving was also necessary during that time of the year.
In the past Guillory has collected as many as 5,000 toys during Christmas. He said that in addition to the toys, his Doll and Toy Fund has collected cash, checks and money orders that are used to distribute toys to homeless shelters, the United Way and churches.

Santa Claus joins Opelousas attorney, Elbert Guillory, as the special guest of the Elbert Guillory Family Toy Drive. The event, started by his daughter Imani 31 years ago was held Saturday at the Guillory Law Office.
