(Note: The views expressed in this column are those of the writer and not St. Landry Then and Now).

Recently during a TV interview, I watched several  teachers from St. Landry Parish express their feelings about issues with the St. Landry Parish School Board.  I was amazed at the courage they showed in revealing the truth about the problems they were forced to contend with every day.  As such, I am concerned that they will leave this parish if these issues are not resolved.

My reply is PLEASE, DO NOT LEAVE.  Something must be done to help you.  The residents  of this parish are the solution.  For too long now, our citizens have taken a back seat and allowed politicians  (board members) to decide the  fate of education in our public  school system. Some board members promise a school system fit for our children–where they ALL learn with qualified teachers.  Yet, once in office, they forget their promises and look out for their own best interest.  Too many members currently on the board have no vested interested in the children–their children or grandchildren are not in the public schools in this parish.  At this point, I must ask, “Why?”

The only way we can ensure our children’s academic future by keeping good teachers is to take control of the St. Landry Parish School Board.  We need members on the Board who genuinely have the best interest of all children.  That my friends, are the parents.  Parents must come forward and take a seat on the board, be a representative–a voice for their families and teachers.

Qualifications  for school board member are minimal.  According to state law:

By the date  of qualification, the candidate shall have attained the age of 18, resided in Louisiana for the preceding 2 years, and have been actually domiciled for the preceding year in the parish, ward, or district from which the candidate seeks election.  The candidate shall be able to read and write.

A check with voter registration,  Board members are included in the November 2022 election.  CONCERNED parents with children in public school should  be conducting evaluations of their respective school board member.  If that member is not fulfilling their job, then elect someone who has a vested interest in your children.

AND TO OUR TEACHERS OF THIS PARISH—THANK YOU AND STICK AROUND–you will have the support of new ideas–PARENTS ON THE SCHOOL BOARD.

Very Respectfully,
