Photo From The Past
The first Yambilee Festival parade rolled down Landry Street on Thursday, October 10, 1946. It was a grand parade, in spite of the weather. Although it rained just about all day for that first Yambilee, the community was behind the agriculture festival and the annual event continued in Opelousas for over six decades.
The photograph provides a look at West Landry Street in the 1940s. Notice the Waldorf Hotel that served Opelousas for many years, and the store of Harry Tankle that many in Opelousas remember as a popular men’s shop. (Carola Lillie Hartley Collection.)
