Second Arrest Made in Firearms Case

On May 03, 2022 officers with the Opelousas Police Department arrested Peter Jermark Jones, age 27, 1219 S. Railroad Avenue, Opelousas, LA 70570, for Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, unlawful handling of a machine gun.  Jones was arrested regarding a March 31, 2022 investigation that resulted in officers locating an illegal firearm that had been modified to fire in what is considered full-auto mode firing multiple rounds(LARS 40:1751) with one press of the trigger. This type of modification is commonly referred to as a “switch”. This type of modification has been observed on several firearms that have recently been seized by officers. This type of modification is a State (LARS 40:1752) as well as Federal Law violation. A previous arrest had been made on the case. Jadakiss K. Thomas, age 20, 121 W. Church Street, Opelousas, LA., 70570, Possession of schedule I CDS, felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful handling of a machine gun was booked on April 06, 2022.  It is possible that these offenders could face additional charges once the weapon involved is analyzed by crime lab technicians.  Officers take it very seriously when weapons like these are found on our streets due to the enhanced danger they pose to our citizens. Officers of the Opelousas Police Department are seizing firearms on a daily basis in an effort to thwart gun violence in our City.
