The board works best when its members are tourism partners or have a strong interest in the industry.     According to La. statute RS 33:4574 (44)(F)(b)(i), which covers “Tourist commissions; creation; purpose; directors; powers,” commission appointments “shall be made from a list of nominees submitted to the governing authority or authorities by private, nonprofit groups that have an interest in one or more aspects of the tourism industry.”

Examples of these groups include mayors, Main Street and tourism directors, Chambers of Commerce, historical districts, cultural associations, merchant associations, restaurant owners, lodging partners and event organizers. We urge you to consider a nominee with knowledge and experience in tourism for the commission.

A board appointment application, which each applicant must still submit, is available on our website at CajunTravel.com/about-st-landry-parish-louisiana/tourist-commission under “Commission Nominations”.    The deadline for applications is April 5 at noon. Attaching a signed letter of support for your nominee would be helpful. You can deliver your paperwork to Sherrell Jordan at the Parish Council office. The office is located in the old City Hall, across from the Delta Grand and the Parish Jail.    Your nomination and support of St. Landry Parish tourism is greatly appreciated.

Commission Purpose
Positioning St. Landry Parish as a leading tourism destination in the state, region and south is the main objective of the St. Landry Parish Tourist Commission. By working with local accommodations, attractions, specialty shops, artists and restaurants, we continuously market and promote our unique heritage and culture, making tourism a leading industry in St. Landry Parish. The Commission is housed in an award-winning, sustainably-designed visitor information center. There, travelers are greeted and encouraged to explore our authentic Cajun and Creole communities, rich with local flavor, where “We live our culture!”

The seven-member Commission, appointed by the governing authority of the parish, meets on a monthly basis to review overall policy, budget, finances, marketing plans, and programs. This meeting is held on the second Wednesday of every month at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Information Center and is open to the public.
