What’s New: The redesigned aspect for Northwest actually represents a nod towards the past. Expect the Raiders to again feature more of a spread offense, a 3-4 defensive look and away from the Wing-T.  Edwards is in his 10th season at Northwest and dean of the parish coaches.

Looking Back: Northwest once again executed a late-season surge, winning the last three games in order to reach the first round of the playoffs and finish 6-5.

What Does The Coach Say: “We have three offensive linemen returning.I like our size there along with our athleticism at a number of skill positions. We have a couple of players that are being recruited by Division 1 schools. We have a tough preseason schedule (Northside, Eunice, Crowley, Beau Chene) that will challenge us right away.” – Chris Edwards.

Offensive Story: Edwards thinks it’s time to reopen the offense. Senior running back Javion Reese, injured most of 2022, returns with nearly 1,500 career rushing yards. Edwards thinks the loss of five linemen from last year will be offset by the return of three other experienced blockers.

Defensive Story. The Raiders, says Edwards, are expecting a big season from senior defensive end McKenzie Ardoin, (6-foot-4, 210) an outside linebacker and defensive end. The defensive line is solid.

Preseason standouts: Javion Reese (running back), Davon Thibodeaux (linebacker), McKenzie Ardoin (defensive end, linebacker)

Comments from the players:  “I feel you will see a big improvement. I like our blocking and the defensive line is coming back.” – Javion Reese

Comments from the players: “Last year was kind of disappointing, but we learned not to give up. I think that will make us more determined now.” – McKenzie Ardoin

Comments from the players: “”I think the defensive line is our strength. I think you will see us give more effort and we will have more focus.” – Davon Thibodeaux

X-Factor: The Raiders have been affected by injuries the past couple of seasons, especially offensively. Northwest needs to stay healthy in a district with six other teams.
