St. Landry Parish School Board Personnel Committee members are recommending a job description change that promotes Sylvia Brown to the District Supervisor of School Nurses position.

The Personnel Committee decision came Tuesday night after special education supervisor Alvado Willis, read a detailed list of Brown’s responsibilities.

Brown, who was present at the meeting, did not speak to the committee.

Superintendent Patrick Jenkins had attempted several times without success during the past three years to have Brown’s job description elevated to supervisor.

After the series of committee meetings, Jenkins said if approved by board members during a regular September meeting, Brown will add “several thousand dollars” to her Head Nurse current base $70,000 salary.

Willis said Brown is a qualified medical examiner who is in charge of health assessments for all parish public, parochial and private school students.

Brown, said Willis, is especially critical in evaluating special needs students.

In addition Willis oversees the job performances of 16 school registered nurses and two LPN’s within the District.

During the COVID pandemic Willis said Brown was essential in establishing employee and student health protocols that including vaccination clinics, weekly testing.
