Donovan Thomas and Javian Reese continue to run wild out of the Northwest High Wing-T offensive formation, while the Raider’s defense is continuing to help win games.

If the Raiders can get past losing fumbles, Northwest High head coach Chris Edwards likes the combination of his team’s rushing attack along with an improving defense that he felt was evident Friday night in the 47-16 victory over Beau Chene.

“I thought we had another good night running the football, but what I also liked what I saw from our defense. They had another great game and kept us in it, considering we lost three fumbles and we had a blocked punt,” Edwards said.

Offensively the Raiders received another pair of key performances from fullback Javian Reese and running back Donovan Thomas, who each gained over 200 yards.

Thomas (231 rushing yards) scored three times on long runs of 53, 18 and 34 yards. Reese (226 yards) also provided three scores on runs of (18, 82 and 27 yards).

The Northwest offense produced 490 total yards, with 479 on running attempts.

Defensively Edwards thought junior defensive end McKenzie Ardoin had another key game.

“(Ardoin) is someone who just came out for football last year and he has been learning the game after coming off the basketball court. He’s physical and fast and now he is understanding the game,” Edwards said.

Beau Chene (1-2) was limited to 109 total yards. The Gators passed for 72 yards and rushed for another 37.

Gators’ quarterback Jhykai Sharp was 3-for-4 passing.

Northwest (2-1) climbed ahead 20-0 by the end of the first quarter following touchdown runs from Reese and a pair by Thomas.

Beau Chene struck back in the second period after wide receiver Payton Comeaux caught a 32-yard pass.

Reese erased the momentum from that TD catch with the 82-yard kickoff return.

What’s next? Northwest opens District 5-3A at home on Friday against Eunice. Beau Chene hosts Abbeville.
