The St. Landry Parish Council unanimously reappointed two members of the Solid Waste Commission during a regular monthly meeting Wednesday night.
Jack Ortego and longtime Commission member Edward Briscoe will continue serving staggered terms on the SWC, which oversees the operation of the parish solid waste landfill and the programs at recycling centers in Opelousas and Eunice.
In an unrelated matter, the Council also voted to advertise for the vacant Registrar of Voters position.
Council members chose Ortego and Briscoe over Herman Rue, a retired landfill employee. Rue failed to receive a vote from any of the council members present.
Landfill executive director Richard LeBouef told council members prior to the vote that he was not recommending any changes in the nine-member Commission.
“Now is not the time for any leadership changes on the St. Landry Solid Waste Commission,” LeBouef said.
St. Landry is preparing to switch residential garbage collection when Bayou State Waste assumes responsibility for trash pickup for approximately 33,000 households parish wide.
The Council is responsible for making four Commission appointments.
Three Council members – Dexter Brown, Harold Taylor and Alvin Stelly were absent from the meeting.
REGISTRAR OF VOTERS APPOINTMENT
The Council is also preparing to advertise for an appointed Registrar of Voters to fill the vacancy of Cheryl Milburn, whose retirement became effective in July.
Lauren Jones, who worked as a deputy registrar during Milburn’s term, has become interim registrar, following Milburn’s retirement.
Jones indicated during a Council meeting several months ago that she plans to apply for the registrar position.
During the same meeting Milburn told the Council that she was recommending Jones for the appointment as permanent registrar.
