EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice Baseball and head coach Jeff Willis were the subject of the cover story in the January 2022 edition of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The article, entitled “The Incredible Story of LSU Eunice’s Jeff Willis,” chronicles the Bengals’ rise to prominence in the 19 years Willis has led the program.

Since Jeff Willis came to Eunice in 2003, the Bengals have established themselves as one of the most successful college baseball programs in the sport’s history. LSUE sports a 902-196 record under Willis, which according to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper editor Lou Pavolvich, Jr., makes Willis the second winningest coach in the history of college baseball over all divisions by a coach either active or retired.

The seven National Championships that LSUE has won under Willis’s watch makes it the third most championships by any college baseball coach in history of all levels as well.

The article chronicles Willis’s journey to Eunice, starting as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M-Kingsville, applying to countless jobs only to get no response and finally landing at LSUE at the age of 24. Willis would take a school with no assistants and no scholarships and in four years, capture the first of seven NJCAA National Championships at LSUE.

It goes on to elaborate more on LSUE’s core values, the Bengals’ extensive offseason program and rating systems and some of the keys to LSU Eunice’s historic success rate.

The Bengals also check in as the top ranked team in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper NJCAA Division II Preseason poll. It marks the fourth straight season the Bengals are tops in the preseason rankings.
