Too many fumbles and an excess of penalties were contributing culprits Friday night as Northwest High started the football season against Northside-Lafayette with a 20-8 loss.
The Raiders were called for 123 accepted penalty yards while fumbling three times and having a pass intercepted.
Northside, featuring a new coaching staff, moved in front quickly. The Vikings ended the period with a 14-0 lead before Northwest cut that advantage to one score as wide receiver Lane Fontenot caught a 59-yard pass from quarterback Jayden Chavis.
The second half remained scoreless under Northside scored on a 44-yard run in the fourth quarter.
First quarter scoring occurred when Northside quarterback threw a 36-yard pass to Jaylin Williams. The Vikings increased the 6-0 lead when Jaylin Williams completed a seven-yard throw to Javin Broussard.
Northwest ended the game with 176 total yards – 89 passing, 87 rushing. The Vikings meanwhile compiled 192 total yards. Most of the Northside yardage (192 yards) were accumulated by passing.
Northside failed to convert on nine third down situations. Northwest was four-of-13 on third down.
NEXT WEEK: Northside travels to play Crowley.
