Chamber Faces Busy Schedule BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor It appears there will be no shortage of activities scheduled over the next few months for members of the St. Landry Chamber of Commerce. Chamber CEO and director Lori Dupuis told Opelousas Noon Rotary Club members on Tuesday that the organization is moving forward with an aggressive membership campaign and several other sponsored events that include a ladies’ luncheon, a stock the community pantry and a tangles and tinsel celebration.  On Thursday night one of the highlight events for the Chamber is the annual Horses And Harmony awards banquet scheduled at the Louisiana Equine and Events Center on Harry Guilbeau Road. Dupuis told the Rotarians that at this point she considers Horses And Harmony to be a sold-out occasion. Chamber Membership During the year the Chamber assists with annual high school scholarships. The New Life Church of God Ministry announces the Archangels kids Day Fun Fest on October 17, 2026 at the New Life Church Of God Ministry Retreat Center located at 445 Campground Road, Palmetto, La. 2026 FOOTBALL PREVIEW                 St. Landry Public Schools Here’s a preseason snapshot for all six parish public school football teams. BEAU CHENE Last season (1-9. 0-4) The Gators are in a third year under head coach Buck Harris. Beau Chene has experienced a couple of one-win seasons lately, but here’s what Harris thinks about 2026. “We have some older guys in key positions. The team is looking to continue to improve and have a successful year,” Harris says. Offense Christian Wheeler, (5-11, 185) a running back and offensive workhorse the last two years returns as the key ball carrier. Creswell Tax Increase Moves Forward BOBBY ARDOIN St. Landry Now.com Editor Gretchen Erlingson asked two questions, but she received no answer for each of them. Erlingson asked members of the Opelousas Downtown Development District on Friday morning what projects are planned and how much revenue will be received if the ODD is successful in adopting an ordinance that expands the district boundaries in order for major retailers to collect an additional 1-cent sales tax on Creswell Lane. However Erlingson, an official with Opelousas Main Street, had her questions met with silence before the ODD voted to introduce the ordinance which will receive further consideration during the next two months. ODD board member Pat Fontenot abstained during the introduction vote. Donald D’Avy, Ogden Pitre, Rob Hilliard, Stephen Daste and chairperson Lena Charles voted “yes.” Board member Sarah Branton was absent. Po’ Boys For Veterans

Veteran advocates Dorothy Thomas and Annie LaFontaine prepare po'boy sandwiches on Friday, Aug. 21, to benefit the newly renovated Thomas-LaFontaine Duplex located on Foster Street in Opelousas, The ladiers along with several volunteers prepared the sandwiches and delivered to the customers from 9am-2pm. Thomas and LaFontaine are also responsible for the annual Veterans Day parade that rolls through Opelousas on VeteransDay November 11.

OGH Sends Funds To Schools

Opelousas General Health System Foundation Distributes Funds to Support Health Activity and Safety Opelousas, LA, 8/20/2026 –Opelousas General Health System (OGHS) Foundation has distributed funds to nine St.Landry Parish schools to promote healthy activity and student wellness. Beau Chene High School, Magnet Academyof the Cultural Arts, North Central High School, Northwest High School, Opelousas Catholic School, OpelousasHigh School, Palmetto Elementary, Park Vista Elementary, and Port Barre High School received funding for newprojects ranging from sports equipment to mental health support through creative arts. OGHS Foundation was ableto distribute funding after securing a State of Louisiana grant specifically geared toward enhancing physical activityin school children.According to The American Academy of Pediatrics Center of Excellence on Social Media and Youth Mental Health,the average screen time exceeds 8 hours a day for teenagers aged 13 to 18.
