Opelousas Police Investigating Shooting Involving 17-Year-Old Male
Opelousas, LA – On Saturday, May 24, 2025, at approximately 10:49 p.m., the Opelousas Police Department was notified by staff at Opelousas General Hospital that a 17-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the head had arrived at the facility by private vehicle.
Officers immediately responded to the hospital and began reviewing surveillance footage to identify the individuals who transported the victim. Through the use of real-time crime technology and video review, the vehicle was quickly identified, and officers made contact with the involved parties.
Based on witness interviews and further investigation, it was determined that the incident occurred at a residence in the 900 block of Garland Avenue. Preliminary findings suggest the injury may have been the result of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The victim remains in critical condition and has been transferred to a regional trauma center for advanced medical treatment. While the early investigation points toward an accidental shooting, the case remains open and charges have not been ruled out at this time.
