Juneteenth Celebration Starts Friday

A two-day Juneteenth recognition begins this Friday in Opelousas with a paid-event at Evangeline Downs, followed by the annual Farmers Market program starting at noon on Saturday.

Sponsored by the Creole Heritage Foundation, sponsor Rebecca Henry says the celebratory occasion is aimed at providing St. Landry Parish with a better understanding of Juneteenth — particularly a younger generation which needs to better recognize the significance of the historical event.

“While we acknowledge the national recognition of Juneteenth and the continued efforts to bring awareness to its importance, the city of Opelousas and St. Landry Parish have been leaders in honoring this celebration for more than 30 years,” Henry wrote in an announcement presented on Tuesday night during a monthly meeting of the Opelousas Board of Aldermen.

Henry said the purpose of the Juneteenth awareness effort is to also showcase the “rich culture of Southwest Louisiana – highlighting its arts, music, language, cuisine and longstanding traditions,” Henry added in a press release.

“Many of our at-risk youth have had limited exposure to the arts, and cultural experiences. Through this event, we create opportunities for families, friends, and visitors to come together in unity, fellowship and celebration — offering a meaningful and memorable experience for all,” Henry wrote.

The funds raised at the Friday night donation-supported La La Gala at Evangeline Downs will be used to support ongoing initiatives offered through Creole Heritage, including a cultural summer enrichment program for boys and girls 8-17 at the Heritage center on West Vine Street, according to Henry.
