What’s New: There’s a father-son coaching team at Westminster as Byron Porter and his son, Brandon Porter were selected in June to coach the program.

Last season: The Crusaders finished 2-8 overall. WCA lost four of the last five games.

Looking Ahead: The Porter coaching tandem accepted the Westminster job in June, so there was little time to acclimate the Crusaders with the transition.

What Does The Coach Say? “We came in and we had to hit the ground running. We have been able to get in our conditioning program and the kids have responded well to the transition. Right now we have about 30 guys, so I’d say we have a typical Class 1A roster.” – Byron Porter

The Offensive Story: Porter says the Crusaders will align in a spread formation again this year, but look for the Crusaders to open the offense even more, as sophomore quarterback Stephen George continues to develop. Brandon Porter will run the offense.

The Defensive Story: Look for Westminster to play a 4-2-5 defensive scheme. “We plan to play fast, aggressive and use all of our athleticism,” Byron Porter says.

Preseason Standout players: Senior offensive lineman Brenn Ray (6-3, 240) and senior Josh Cassimere (wide receiver, defensive back, return specialist).

Comments From Josh Cassimere: “I’m going to be an all-around player, doing a lot of different things. Our new coaches have brought in a new mindset and in a short amount of time they have made us comfortable. We’ve moved some players around, but everyone knows their responsibilities.”

Comments From Brenn Ray: “Offensively, we have the same scheme and we should be better as (George) gets more comfortable. My offensive line teammates (William Moody, Conner Payne) are ready to keep us going. Not having spring football I don’t think is going to be that big of a deal.”

X-Factor: Former Opelousas High and Southern University standout quarterback Sam George has agreed to volunteer his help. George is the father of WCA quarterback Stephen George.
