After the first three weeks of 2025, it appears the District 5-1A head football coaches have been right all along.
The 5-1A coaches have claimed that the league might be one of the most challenging of any other district statewide and there is no reason to believe otherwise, since their teams’ overall records speak for themselves.
Six of the 5-1A programs take 3-0 non-district records into the start of league play this week, as a count down for the November champion is set to begin.
Opelousas Catholic, Catholic High-Pointe Coupee, Westminster Christian Academy, Sacred Heart, North Central and St. Edmund have not lost yet this year, but only three of those teams will remain undefeated following district games this Friday night.
Let’s take a look at the 5-1A schools and their current records:
Opelousas Catholic
The Vikings, as projected, feature one of the area’s best offenses, but it’s the OCS defense that is also capturing attention.
OCS has allowed 19 points in three wins, as the Vikings are rolling on that side of the ball with new offensive schemes designed by a trio of new coordinators.
Offensively, the Vikings have continued to post serious numbers, averaging over 30 points.
In a 47-6 win over Port Barre on Thursday night, the Vikings received offensive production from quarterback Kross Gillen (285 passing yards, 5 TD’s), running back Royce Butler (11 carries, 166 yards, 1 TD), and receivers Maurice Marcel (7 receptions, 127 yards, 3 TD’s) and Roderick Tezeno (5 receptions 82 yards, 2 TD’s).
Westminster Christian
“We have our team believing in what we are doing and they are a group of kids who don’t mind working hard,” says WCA head coach Byron Porter.
The Crusaders used five Westminster-Lafayette turnovers on Friday night to help defeat the Chargers 49-7 in a game played in Youngsville.
WCA senior quarterback Stephen George passed for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another two, while running back Kyle Horde sealed the victory with a 53-yard touchdown run that gave the Crusaders a 28-0 lead midway through the third period.
Horde ran 11 times for 118, while defensively he had 11 tackles.
Other key offensive performers for the Crusaders were Damien Thomas (1 TD reception), Evan Lemon (2 TD’s), Jack Hunt (1 TD), and Caden Brown (1 TD).
WCA led 21-0 at halftime and the Crusaders afterward took control in the second half with four unanswered TD’s.
Statistically WCA has the league’s best scoring defense, allowing only one touchdown.
St. Edmund
The Blue Jays have displayed an offense that has scored no fewer than 55 points in the three victories.
St. Edmund is averaging 57.7 points and a total offense that has gained 1,425 yards after 12 quarters. That’s an average of 13.2 yards per play.
Quarterback Nathan Zaunbrecher has passed for 818 yards and seven touchdowns. Hudson Simon has 11 catches for 305, while Max Smith has caught seven for 257.
On Thursday night St. Edmund defeated Morgan City 60-0.
North Central
Head coach Dwight Collins is rebuilding the image of North Central football after fewer than two years as head coach.
The Hurricanes have used their spread offense to score an average of 44 points, as they venture into Eunice this Friday night to meet St. Edmund
Catholic Pointe-Coupee
CHPC has played up in classification during non-district and the Hornets are undefeated after beating Red River (26-24), Crowley (63-12) and Archbishop Hannan (36-35) on Friday night.
Head coach Jacob Carruth has a team that returns 14 starters from 2024.
Sacred Heart
Like the rest of the district, the Trojans are scoring points and denying offensive success for the opposition.
Sacred Heart hadn’t allowed a touchdown until the Friday night win over Basile (38-15).
