McNeese graduate expands his music outreach
Kaleb LeDay, an instructor in the upcoming Balfa Week music camp, leads the next Zydeco Capital Jam from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Center at I-49 exit 23 in Opelousas. The jam is a free event, open to all musicians and fans of zydeco music.
LeDay, a guitarist with Rusty Metoyer and Zydeco Krush, returns as an accordion teacher at the Dewey Balfa Cajun and Creole Heritage Week. The camp is set for March 19-24 at Lakeview Park and Beach in Eunice.
Campers from across the country learn accordion, fiddle, French vocals, dance and more. Each night ends with a barn dance featuring Geno Delafose, Christine Balfa and other Cajun and Zydeco artists.
A recent graduate in accounting at McNeese State University, LeDay sports a healthy music resume. He was the Zydeco Grand Prize Winner at the 15th Annual Big Squeeze Statewide Accordion Contest, a Texas Folklife event. At McNeese, he was a member of the Zyde-Pokes, the school’s student band.
Fluent in zydeco, Creole and Cajun styles, Leday teaches online and in-person lessons through his web site, lessonsbyleday.com.
