City honor Opelousas area women for International Women's Day

Six Opelousas-area women were recognized before the start of the city’s Board of Aldermen meeting Tuesday night in connection with International Women’s Day.

Mayor Julius Alsandor presented the honorees with symbolic keys to the city.

Each of the women recognized Alsandor said, have made contributions in different ways to the economic or social progress around Opelousas.

Those honored included the following:

Tracey Antee, director of the Opelousas General Health Systems Foundation

Lena Charles, chairperson for the Opelousas Downtown Development District and director for the original Southwest Zydeco Music Festival for several decades

Madelyn Rosette, a state director of CASA

Karen Cox, founder of Kalaco Solutions, LLC and a founding partner of St. Landry Now news website

Melanie LeBouef, Opelousas director of tourism and the city’s Main Street program

Vernoica Mallet, advocacy for veteran’s affairs nationwide and Louisiana
