CRIME STOPPERS TIP LEADS DETECTIVES TO

NARCOTICS IN OPELOUSAS

According to Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz, “In June 2024, narcotics detectives with the St.
Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office received a Crime Stoppers tip in regards to Matthew
Babineaux selling illegal narcotics from 204 McClelland Road in Opelousas, Louisiana.
On August, 2, 2024, detectives established surveillance on the residence.  During the
course of the surveillance, detectives observed Babineaux depart the residence in a small
blue Toyota Corolla.  The narcotics street team then utilized a marked unit to conduct a
probable cause stop on Babineaux for a no seatbelt violation on Highway 35.”

Upon stopping Matthew Babineaux, detectives smelled a strong odor of marijuana from
inside the vehicle and on Babineaux’s person.  The vehicle was searched and detectives
located a marijuana cigar in the center console.  Detectives also located $1,654.00 in US
currency on Babineaux’s person, which Babineaux advised he won playing dice.
Babineaux was then advised of his Miranda Rights and began speaking to detectives.
Babineaux lied to detectives and advised he was coming from Lawtell Fast Food Mart
and was on his way to Church Point.  Detectives confronted Babineaux and advised him
that they had watched him leave 204 McClelland Road in Opelousas. Babaineaux
advised that his girlfriend resided at the residence and he lived in Church Point.
Detectives then explained to Babineaux that they knew he lived at the residence from
countless hours of surveillance, and advised Babineaux that they were going to apply for
a search warrant for the residence.  Babineaux advised that it made no sense to him since
he only had a small amount of marijuana left inside the residence.  Detectives then asked
Babineaux if the residence contained any firearms and he advised that his girlfriend had a
firearm.
Detectives then obtained a search warrant for the residence.   Prior to searching the
residence detectives knocked on the door which was answered by Babieaux’s girlfriend,
who was identified as Andree Shakesnider.  Shakesnider was in the residence with her
two juvenile sons. The residence was then cleared for additional suspects.
Upon searching the residence detectives located the following:
 1 shotgun;
 1 rifle;
 54 pills of Hydrocodone;
 31 pills of Oxycodone;
 approximately 1 gram of suspected cocaine; and
 $5,020.00 in US currency.
On August 2, 2024, Matthew Babineaux was transported to the St. Landry Parish Jail and
charged with failure to use safety belts, possession with intent to distribute schedule II
CDS (2 counts), possession of a firearm in the presence of a CDS (2 counts),
possession of a CDS in the presence of persons under 17 years of age (2 counts), and
transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses.
