Democratic Forum Draws Interest

The two nights of the St. Landry Parish Democratic Women’s Political Forum this past week combined candidate theatre with social assimilation.
A cordial meet and greet atmosphere at the Yambilee Building became an opportunity for aspiring municipal and parish political office seekers to promote their platform and introduce themselves to voters.
There was also heightened entertainment on what was otherwise two apparently two quiet weeknights in Opelousas.
Attendance estimates for both nights of the fifth annual presentation ranged from 300-500 persons, who mingled with candidates, shared stories and remembrances as they introduced themselves to one another.
Nearly every candidate had room for tables, displays, campaign signs and in some cases, candies and snacks for those who stopped by for information, a handshake or perhaps a hug.
Participating candidates had fewer than five minutes to make themselves and ideas known to the seated audience.
The rancor or personal attacks that might have appeared on social media on behalf or against the candidates were disallowed in order to filter the tone of the presentations.
As State Representative Dustin Miller said on the first night of the event, “When (the event) is over then it’s time for (candidates) to get to work. After the election is when it’s time for us to come together,” said Miller.
