New “Giving Fridge’ Opens to Support Food Access in St. Landry Parish
ST. LANDRY PARISH – St. Landry Parish Government is pleased to announce the installation
of “The Giving Fridge,” a community-supported public refrigerator located outside the St.
Landry Parish Community Action Food Distribution Center at 1065 Highway 749 in Opelousas,
LA. The fridge is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for individuals and families in need.
The Giving Fridge was created and donated by local residents Itzell Camacho and Juan Carlos
Cruz. St. Landry Parish Government is providing the physical location, while the fridge itself is
entirely community-run and community-supported, operating on principles of mutual aid and
shared responsibility.
A community fridge is a public refrigerator where neighbors may freely share food, helping
reduce waste and increase access to fresh items for anyone facing food insecurity. The concept is
simple:
Take what you need, give what you can.
Residents wishing to donate may drop off groceries, produce, and safe, sealed food items at any
time. Prepared meals or individually packaged foods should be properly labeled and dated in
accordance with food safety guidelines.
St. Landry Parish Government reminds the public that the fridge is not owned, operated, or
stocked by SLPG. Its success relies solely on the generosity and continued participation of
community members.
St. Landry Parish Government extends its sincere appreciation to Itzell Camacho and Juan
Carlos Cruz for their leadership in bringing this project to life and for their commitment to
supporting local families.
