Residents living south of Opelousas have seen their water movement problems addressed during the past several months, following the completion of three Ward 1, South Gravity Drainage District projects totaling $141,000.
Members of the drainage board met Monday night in Opelousas where they discussed the conclusion of each project which included installing and replacing culverts located underneath roadways.
The Parish Council-appointed members of the Board located inside District 9, also presented former secretary treasurer Claire Speyrer with a plaque for handling that position for 29 years.
Completed projects discussed at the March meeting were the replacement of three culverts along Meghan Drive off La. 182, at a cost of $39,500 and a $22,000 expense for culvert replacement and drainage mitigation on Honeysuckle Lane south of Opelousas.
About half of the Honeysuckle Lane project was financed from parish government funding, according to District 9 council member Wayne Ardoin.
The Drainage Board, which is represented by three engineers and an attorney, also spent $140,000 for major culvert and drainage work along Flag Station Road, according to financial information provided by the District.
Ardoin said the District is supported by a 3.6 mill tax.
