Harry Jerry was recognized by the city of Opelousas at Tuesday night’s Opelousas City Council meeting.He spent 24 years as a member of the Opelousas Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Board, just one of his many accomplishments. He served during the Korean War beginning in 1950 as a member of the 24th infantry combat regiment. He became the first black teacher at Opelousas High School and taught social studies classes for 30 years. He is a Southern University graduate attending classes there after his military service. He was presented a recognition plaque by board member Sarah Branton at Tuesday’s meeting. He will be 93 on March 21
