Inmate Escapes From Behavioral Health Center During Transport

Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz reports, “On 4/15/2026, Michael Vavasseur was being transported by
the STOA Behavioral Health staff from Baton Rouge to the St. Landry Parish Jail. When the
vehicle came to East Landry Street and Wallior Street, Vavasseur had removed one hand from
his restraints and bailed out of the van.” Sheriff Guidroz continues, “Vavasseur is considered
dangerous and unpredictable. If you see him DO NOT APPROACH, contact local authorities
at once. He was last seen in the neighborhoods behind Lowe’s, wearing a grey t-shirt and grey
shorts. He was in leg restraints and still had one hand restrained at his waist. The St. Landry
Parish Sheriff’s Office is working with the Opelousas Police Department in the apprehension of
Vavasseur. Any assistance from the public would be greatly appreciated.”
