The St. Landry Parish Sheriff Department and Opelousas Police officers are again asking the public to assist with information that could help solve the April 23 shooting death of an off-duty parish sheriff deputy.

In a recently re-released St. Landry Parish Crime Stoppers video, Chief Deputy Eddie Thibodeaux and OPD investigator Michael Hidalgo indicate that local law enforcement needs continued help with tips from the public in connection with the homicide investigation of Chanterria Albert, 23, who was shot in the 1110 block of Park Avenue in Opelousas.

Investigators have said that another person who was with Albert at the time of the incident, was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

Albert had worked as a corrections officer for more than two years at the Sheriff’s Department. Albert and another person were shot outside a Park Avenue residence.

The Sheriff’s Department and OPD, which are working together on the Albert investigation, said that witnesses indicate that about 30 shots were fired at about 10:30 p.m.during the incident that killed Albert.

Images and videos obtained at the scene and released to the public on a Sheriff’s Department Crime Stoppers video show that a black sedan parked underneath a carport was also struck multiple times as shots were fired.

Funeral services for Albert were held May 4 at the Community Chapel Church of God on College Avenue in Opelousas.

Further information on the homicide can be provided to the Opelousas Police Department (337-948-2520) or by contacting deputies at 337-948 TIPS. Emailed information can be forwarded to crimetips@opelousaspd.com.
