Lighting of the Nativity is more than a holiday event—it’s a celebration of community, history, and
the spirit of Opelousas. We are honored to carry forward this legacy for future generations.”
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the historic Nativity Scene at St. Landry Parish Courthouse
Square. The tradition began in the 1940s, and in 1953 a special building was constructed to house
the figures. At the unveiling ceremony on December 6, 1953, community leaders including Mabel
Cools, Sidney Sandoz, and Robert Dejean were recognized for their contributions to the project
