St. Landry Jury Convicts Shooter 

Yesterday, October 29, 2025, after a two-day trial and a short deliberation, aSt.Landry Parish jury found Nicholas Sam, 32, of Washington guilty of one count of Attempted Second Degree Murder, two counts of Attempted Manslaughter, one count of Illegal Use of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime of Violence, and one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm. 

On April 2, 2023, just before 5:00pm, shots rang out near “Mama’s Fried Chicken” on West Landry Street in Opelousas. Surveillance video caught Sam running through a parking lot, dropping the magazine of his weapon, reloading the handgun, and chasing the car before discharging his weapon. 

The several felony convictions Sam faces carry a minimum imprisonment of no less than ten years and up to fifty years at hard labor. Sentencing in this matter is set for January 8, 2026.
