Although they ate their baked chicken and rice dressing meal on opposite sides of the Opelousas Civic Center on Thursday night, the players on the Opelousas and Northwest High football teams were treated to a unique “pregame” meal experience.
In less than 24 hours Opelousas and Northwest, two schools that draw their school enrollments from parts of the city, would be scheduled to kickoff at Donald Gardner Stadium.
Some called the Opelousas-Northwest match up The Spice Bowl or The Zydeco Bowl, but before engaging their suppers, the players from each team were reminded that on Friday night they would be just opponents and not enemies.
Opelousas principal Greg Campbell, previously the principal at Northwest, said the teams last met during a regular season game in 2019.
The teams have met since then in several St. Landry Parish jamborees.
