Northwest High secured a long-awaited first 2025-season win on Friday night, while state-ranked Church Point has emerged as the leader in District 4-3A.
Six of the seven teams in 4-3A have losing records and Northwest High head coach Chris Edwards thinks the league title will be decided when his Raiders host Church Point on Oct. 16.
“Right now that’s when all the chips go on the table,” Edwards said on Monday morning, a couple of days following the 44-0 victory over winless 4-3A Pine Prairie last Friday night.
The Pine Prairie win, accomplished by a Northwest lineup that has been crippled by injuries, amid a schedule that has included programs who are having winning seasons.
Northwest featured quarterback Chaise Dupre, who threw for 148 yards and four touchdowns against the Panthers and a number of receivers that included Malek Davis and Coulton Young (four catches, 64 yards).
Raiders’ placekicker Gavon Fontenot kicked a 41-yard field goal to help highlight the Northwest offensive production.
The Raiders scored all but one touchdown during the first half.
Northwest has been without most of its offensive starters for the past two weeks, including running back Ke’Von Johnson, who rushed for 357 yards in the Raiders’ first two games.
Edwards expects Johnson to be sidelined for the Ville Platte game this week. Johnson and several of the other key offensive pieces should be able to return for the Church Point contest, according to Edwards.
Church Point, ranked eighth this week in the Week 6 Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll, has scored no fewer than 35 points during the last three games, which included a 35-10 District 4-3A opener at Iota last Friday night.
The Bears, according to head coach Rob Poole, are healthy again, after experiencing a number of injuries in a Week 2 defeat at Marksville.
Poole feels that the 4-3A should once again be decided among Church Point, Iota and Northwest.
“Iota (1-4, 0-1) is still a factor and can tie (Church Point). I tell my players all the time, that you don’t look at the records. Iota has played a tough schedule and so has Northwest,” Poole added.
Senior quarterback Luke Baudoin threw for 283 yards and four TD’s in the win over Iota, Running back Chad Brooks rushed for 82 on 12 carries, while Jarrison Reese caught 12 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns.
