OHS Season Has Unexpected Start

If the first two weeks of the Opelousas High 2024 season could be framed in words, it might best be described as a false start.

“It’s been rocky, no doubt about it,” OHS head football coach Jimmy Zachery, Jr. said on Wednesday.

OHS was scheduled to begin the year with two home games.

That hasn’t happened.

Opelousas, now ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, anticipated hosting a previously-scheduled Donald Gardner Stadium contest against Teurlings Catholic last Friday night.

That game however was moved to Teurlings after Zachery said Louisiana High School Athletic Association officials declared several hours before kickoff that the Donald Gardner playing surface was unsuitable and unsafe.

Teurlings defeated Opelousas 21-14.

Due to impact from Hurricane Francine, the No. 3 Tigers won’t play at home against Edna Karr this Friday night. Karr is located on the New Orleans West Bank, which absorbed, on late Wednesday,  the effects from the storm.

“Canceling the game with Karr has nothing to do with the conditions at Donald Gardner Stadium,” Zachery said.

So far Zachery sees a familiarity with 2023.

Opelousas played only two regular season home games last year.

“It’s looking like we are going to be taking it back out on the road again. Once we can get the rain out of here, I think we are going to be fine. This is just something else that we are going to have to deal with,” Zachery added.

Zachery said not having Class 5A Karr as an opponent this Friday night is detrimental.

“We needed to play a team the caliber of second-ranked Karr. We want our players to get used to playing against the best. That is something that we feel will just make our guys better players,” added Zachery.

Zachery said that although the Teurlings contest last Friday night was moved to Lafayette, Opelousas High was considered the home team.

“We received the proceeds of the gate and paid the referees. Teurlings received the concessions and paid the security,” Zachery said.OHS Season Has Unexpected Start
