Opelousas Police Department Investigating Fatal Shooting Involving Child
OPELOUSAS, LA — The Opelousas Police Department is investigating a tragic shooting involving a child that occurred near Kim Drive and Mia Street on last night, Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at approximately 11:00 p.m.
Preliminary information indicates that the child succumbed to injuries sustained, as the result of what investigators believe, to be a negligent discharge of a firearm. Investigators are continuing to gather information and determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available and as the investigation allows.
Chief Graig LeBlanc and the Opelousas Police Department ask the community to keep the child’s family, loved ones, and everyone affected by this tragedy in their thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time.
