Opelousas Police Department Makes Arrest in Joseph Street Shooting
Opelousas, LA – The Opelousas Police Department responded to a shooting in the 800 block of
Joseph Street at approximately 2:00 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered a Black male lying on
the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound. Tragically, this individual was later pronounced
deceased.
Shortly after arriving on the scene, investigators were informed of a second individual who had
been transported to a local hospital by private vehicle. This individual, also suffering from a
gunshot wound, remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Through the assistance of concerned citizens, investigators identified the residence where the
suspect had fled. A search warrant was obtained for a residence in the 800 block of Planters
Street. During the execution of the warrant, several individuals were detained for questioning.
Investigators conducted a thorough search of the residence and recovered three firearms, one of
which is believed to have been used in the commission of the homicide.
After several hours of interviews, investigators secured a confession from the suspect responsible
for the shooting. Joseph Thomas has been arrested and charged with the following offenses:
 Second Degree Murder
 Three counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder
 Illegal Use of Weapons and Dangerous Instrumentalities
Chief Graig Leblanc expressed gratitude to the community members who provided critical
information, leading to the suspect’s apprehension. “This arrest sends a strong message to those
who choose to engage in violent crime. Such actions will not be tolerated, and our citizens are
stepping forward to reclaim their neighborhoods,” said Chief Leblanc.
