 Opelousas Teams Highly-Regarded

Three Opelousas-area high school football teams enter the first week of the regular season ranked among the top 10 teams in their classifications.

Defending Division II non-select state champion Opelousas High was voted the No. 1 team in the first 2024 Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 4A poll issued Monday.

Northwest High and Opelousas Catholic are also recognized in the weekly poll.

Opelousas, who received all but two No. 1 votes, is ranked above No. 2 North DeSoto.

Northwest High, whose roster includes players from several neighborhoods adjoining the Opelousas city and corporate limits, started the year ranked third in the Class 3A poll.

The Raiders reached the 2023 Class 4A semifinal contest.

Top-ranked University High and second-place St. James are placed ahead of Northwest this week.

Opelousas Catholic is ranked No. 9 in the Class 1A rankings.

Ahead of the Vikings in the Week One rankings are No. 1 Southern Lab and No. 8 Ascension Catholic.
