It was a combination of Thanksgiving and Christmas for over 20 St. Landry Parish non-profit agencies on Wednesday as they shared funding benefits provided by State District Court Judge Donald Cravins.

Cravins explained during a ceremonial presentation in his courtroom that he was distributing about $215,000 from what remained in settlement revenues from a pair of class action lawsuits to various non-profits based on the impact those organizations have parish wide.

Legal stipulations, Cravins said, required that the leftover revenues from the lawsuits be redistributed to non-profit agencies.

“You are here today based on what you do for your community,” said Cravins.

Norman Rene, clinical director for the St. Landry Parish Drug Court program, said the money provided by the District Court will be used primarily for literature provided to those currently in the court diversion program.

“There will be a direct and immediate benefit, since we provide educational material for those in the program. The educational material includes meditation booklets and sobriety tips,” Rene said.
