4-7-26 Safety PSA on All Terrain Vehicles

In this “Did You Know” topic from Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz, we will
present safety and legal information on the operation of ATVs.
Off-road vehicles, 3-wheelers, 4-wheelers, side-by-sides or other all-
terrain vehicles can only be operated on the shoulders of public roads
and highways in very limited conditions.

  1. Never on Interstate Highways.
  2. Only for purposes of farm-related activities within a 5-mile
    radius of the farmer’s farm.
  3. The operator must possess a valid Class “E” driver’s license.
  4. The owner/operator must have the motor vehicle registration
    proving the vehicle is engaged in the farming business.
  5. Absent the registration, an affidavit attesting the engagement of
    farming as a business.
  6. Agricultural consultants are included in this provision.
  7. Off-road vehicles may be operated by university or college
    employees, police and EMTs in the scope of their employment
    while on the streets and boundaries of state-owned colleges and
    universities.
  8. Operators of off-road vehicles shall provide, upon demand,
    proof of vehicle liability insurance.
  9. In each of these cases, incidental crossings of public roads or
    highways is authorized.
