St. Landry Parish school board members have begun initial consideration for raising the prices on District-owned property that is being used for camps and recreational purposes between Port Barre and Krotz Springs.

Building, Lands and Sites committee members have proposed charging more for the leased properties, but after speaking with camps property manager Don Leger, the Committee agreed to delay further discussion until August.

The campsite land leased along the Spillway south of the U.S. Highway 190, is one of several parishwide properties owned by the District.

Leger said that Spillway properties are leased annually for $300 to $500 each, depending upon the size of the lots.

In 2018 board members agreed to increase the prices of campsites to $4 per linear foot. Leger agreed with board member Kyle Boss that the amount currently being charged for leases is probably too low.

Several lessees appeared before the Board in 2018 with complaints about proposing an increase of $8 per foot. Leger told the Board it probably is not unreasonable at this point to consider charging $5 per foot.

Leger pointed out that the District is responsible for making improvements on the property. Recently Leger recalled, the District had to expend funding for a camp cleanup which Leger added had become an eyesore.

The District owns other land in parish including a deer lease located in Krotz Springs and property that is used for a Lawtell baseball park.

“You own property that is located in different places. It might be pertinent that the Board begin to discuss how to put that all together,” Leger said.
