St. Landry Crime Stoppers PSA
School Zone Safety
The St. Landry Crime Stoppers Board and our area law enforcement
partners remind us that schools are now in session, which means
everyone must be mindful of safety rules and other important
updates.
- Roadways should now have bold yellow markings on the
roadway designating the exact start and ending of school zones,
especially where speed cameras are in use. - Operating a handheld cell phone for calls, texts or social media is
strictly illegal inside active school zones, with first-offense fines
reaching $500. - Drug-free school zone laws extend penalties up to 2,000 feet
from school property and explicitly ban smoking or vaping
controlled substances (like marijuana) in these areas. - Automated speed or traffic enforcement cameras in school
zones are restricted by state law to active school days and
specific time windows around the start and end of the school
day. - School zone speed limits default to 20 m.p.h. (or 15 m.p.h.
where specifically posted) during active school hours, typically,
7-9 am and 2-4 pm.
