Tax season is also Fraud and Scam season. Capt. Lynnett Chavis with
St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office Elderly Crimes Unit comes to Crime
Stoppers with advice you should heed.
Whether you call them “Scam Calls” or “Robo Callers”, citizens are
approached by a variety of schemes to defraud and steal. These take
place hundreds of times every day, and especially now, during Tax
Season. Don’t be fooled by a phone call from someone you don’t
know, wanting your personal information or a promise of riches that
is certainly too good to be true.
Their tactics are creative, designed to intimidate you, scare you and
make you believe that “they” represent a government office, whether
it’s the FBI, FTC, IRS or whatever. DON’T FALL FOR ANY OF THIS! If
you’ve received a call, a package with a thumb drive from the “IRS” or
any suspicious contact, notify me at the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s
Office. You can dial 337-948-6516 and immediately enter extension
3111 or 3118. You can also email me at LCHAVIS@slpsheriff.com.
To better learn how to avoid being a victim, attend our quarterly
TRIAD events throughout St. Landry Parish each year. If you have any
knowledge of these or any other crimes, submit an anonymous tip
through St. Landry Crime Stoppers at 948-TIPS or download our P3
app and “Tap the App” and “Say It Here” to submit your anonymous
tip. On behalf of the St. Landry Crime Stoppers Board, Capt. Lynnett
Chavis, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Bobby J.
Guidroz, thank you and have a blessed day.
