Opelousas City officials are asking residents to conserve water usage, as municipal work crews continue to address leaks and make necessary repairs, according to a press release issued late Wednesday.
The water consumption situation in Opelousas has increased, city officials said, as residents apparently have continued to drip faucets, as night time temperatures are expected to drop into the low teens Wednesday night.
City officials point out in the press release that the water consumption issue in Opelousas is similar to what other municipalities are experiencing.
Meanwhile city offices are expected to reopen on Thursday, a separate Facebook post noted on the city website.
About The Schools
Parish public school officials announced that all schools in the District will remain closed on Thursday, after being closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The closure of the schools also includes any associated school activities.
School officials noted in a press release that a decision on school openings on Friday will be released at a later date.
Garbage Collection
The St. Landry Parish Solid Waste Disposal District will remain closed until Monday, Jan. 27 in order to assist with the safety of workers, a press release said.
A message on the SWDD website also said parishwide garbage collection delayed this week, will resume on Monday.
Parish Government And Courts
Parish president Jessie Bellard said the parish has removed the 12-hour curfew that was effective Tuesday night.
However Bellard pointed out that roads are expected to become treacherous Thursday due to the build up of melting snow that is expected to turn into ice due to the lower temperatures on Wednesday night.
The parish-operated warming shelter that opened on Sunday is continuing to accept occupants through Friday, Bellard said on Wednesday.
“Our shelter is working very well and (the parish) will assist in getting persons to the shelter,” Bellard added.
A press release issued by the parish and the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Department indicates that all Courthouse offices and Judicial District 27 courtrooms are scheduled to be closed again on Thursday.
Bellard said parish work crews continued blading roads, including some state highways in the Eunice area and north and south of Opelousas.
