St. Landry Parish reidents started lining up early Monday at the Opelousas Civic Center to take advantage of the free health clinic being offered by the Southern University’s Increasing Clinicians of Diversity Program partnered with Love the Boot Love Health Free Clinics bringing free health and medical services to underserved communities.
The free clinic was well represented with local residents. Lines started forming at 6 a.m. and remained that way for the 12 hours of operation closing at 6 p.m. Once inside the civic center participants were open to free dental which included cleaning, extractions and fillings. medical exams included vaccines for COVID and flu as well as treatmnt of minor urgent care conditions, physical exams and HIV testing. Vision exams included eye exams, prescriptions and glasses. Assisting SUICD. were volunteer professionals from the medical, dental and vision fields as well as general volunteers assisting with the overall running of the clinic.
Besides Opelousas the free health clinics were or will be held in Baton Rouge, Alexandria and Shreveport.
