Starting off with a trail ride from the St. Landry Parish Ag Arena, the 38th annual “Here’s the Beef Cook-Off” kicked off without a hitch. The weather was perfect, good food and musical entertainment all proved for a spectacular event as hundreds of visitors filled the Yambilee Ag Arena.
The cook-off featured great local bands like Matthew Ewing and Richard Lebouef along with some of the best food around for the largest beef buffet from the area’s best weekend chefs. Cook-off attendees were in for a carnivorous treat as they went around each booth tasting and judging samples that consisted of gravies and stews, brisket, roast, steak, chili and even tongue. That’s right; beef tongue, which is considered a delicacy around these parts.
Fun jumps and face painting provided fun and amusement for the kids, offering a family-friendly event for all to enjoy.
The Cattlewomen sold sweets and treats in which the proceeds will benefit their scholarships. The event is sponsored by the St. Landry Parish Cattlemen’s Association, Cattlewomen and the Louisiana Beef Industry Council.
St. Landry Parish Government was presented with a check as a generous donation in the amount of $5,000 dollars from the Cattlemen’s Association. Parish President Jessie Bellard expressed his gratitude for the financial support and that it would be put to use towards a new announcer’s booth, allowing the arena to host rodeos and other events in the future.
The Cattlemen’s Association aims to educate people about the importance of the cattle and farm industry in St. Landry Parish and throughout the state of Louisiana.
