Looking Back: The Crusaders experienced a late-season surge in 2023,. Westminster reached the Division IV state playoffs and won a first round game over St. Edmund. Overall WCA finished 6-6, an improvement over the 2-9 finish the previous season.

Looking Ahead: Westminster is in its second-year under head coach Byron Porter, who is encouraged that the football program is acquiring enough athletic talent to compete in a tough Class 1A District.

Preseason Standouts: Stephen George (QB), Kyle Horde (LB,FB), Michael Cunningham (RB), Damien Thomas (WR), Jamari White (WR), Omar Guillory (TE), Connor Payne (OL), Cooper Campo (OL), Evan Lemon (LB), Mac Proffitt (PLK, P).

What the coach says: “I think overall the program has made a lot of progress since we got here last year. We are getting more athletes into our program, including those who are athletes in other sports.” – Byron Porter

Player comments: “I think we are more comfortable this year in what we are doing. I know we have good chemistry on our team right now. Last year we set a standard we want to improve.” – Michael Cunningham

Player comments – “The goal for us now is to go further than we have in the postseason. We are 100 percent better now on this team than we were. Personally I would like to be all-state,” – Kyle Horde.

Further review – George, a junior, has been a starter since his freshman season. Cunningham gained nearly 800 yards despite injuries. Cunningham and Horde were All-District 5-1A  and all-parish selections by St. Landry Now.com.

Offensively WCA has a number of experienced receivers and two returning blockers. Defensively there is experience on the back end with help from Horde. Proffitt is probably the best returning placekicker and punter in St. Landry.
