Local residents learn songwriting techniques, acquiring ideas from photos taken from Where We Live: A History Of Opelousas Neighborhoods on display at the Opelousas museum. About 20 possible future songwriters attended the seminar conducted by Smith.

Steve Smith has had a distinguished career as an educator and performing musician.
Throughout his career, he has served with duty, honor, and firm determination, gaining him the
respect of the community, educators, and musicians. Steve Smith has played piano with various
bands in and around Southwest Louisiana, the most notable being Lil Bob and the Lollipops,
Louisiana Red, Roscoe Chenier, The Boogie All Stars, and Hadley Castille. He recently retired
from his position as the Instrumental music Director at the Magnet Academy for Cultural Arts
(M.A.C A.), a school designed for talented children in St. Landry Parish. He has been directing
the Holy Ghost Gospel Choir since 1981.
