A wet, damp Friday morning didn’t prevent Dorothy Thomas and Friends from holding their annual Veterans Day celebration under the shelter of the Farmers Market. Thomas, originally from Opelousas now resides in California but for the last twenty plus years she makes her way back to her hometown to recognize and honor America’s veterans.
The program began with an honor guard by the Northwest High School ROTC and the playing of the National Anthem by the Opelousas Junior High School Band under the direction of Dorsey Green followed by a greeting from Annie LaFontaine and a prayer by Rev. Nathaniel Thierry. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Rose Minix.
A patriotic dance by students from the St. Landry Parish Charter School and several patriotic songs by Chasity Rideau were followed by guest speakers including Mayor Julius Alsandor and Police Chief Greg LeBlanc
The program closed with comments by Dorothy Thomas and a silent moment for deceased veterans Harry Jerry and John H. Thomas. See a photo gallery of the event at stlandrynow.com
